From our German heritage to the effects of WWII on our city, there is so much unique history to discover. The Frankenmuth Historical Museum also has an entire Educational Program Guide that offers various educational and hands-on tours through three of Frankenmuth’s historical gems: authentically restored German Wolkensdoerfer Log House, Hart Road One-Room Schoolhouse, and the WWII era Eischer House.

You will tour a replica of the original church built in 1846, learn about the significance of the Church Bells in the Forest, explore the current Lutheran Church, wonder at the stain-glass windows that depict the entire story of Frankenmuth, the hand-painted mural of Christ on the ceiling, and end the tour at the St. Lorenz Museum.

The Bavarian Belle Riverboat is a double-deck, handicap accessible paddle-wheel boat. This is a great option for the months of May through October. Not only will your entire group be able to enjoy the scenic boat tour (the Belle seats 150), but they will also get to learn about the history of Frankenmuth through the hour-long narration played over the speakers, enjoy the wildlife among the banks of the Cass River, and they will even travel under the Zehnder’s Covered Bridge, or as it is called in German, the “Holz Brücke” which means wooden bridge. This all-wooden bridge is the only of it’s kind still standing in North America. It has quite the history that you can read here.

The history behind the World Famous Family Style Chicken Dinners in Frankenmuth is nothing short of incredible! Zehnder’s Restaurant and The Bavarian Inn Restaurant both boast delicious fried chicken and buttery noodles as well as a claim to interesting history worth studying. For example, did you know that Zehnder’s Restaurant was originally a hotel called The Exchange Hotel? Or how about this, did you know that both restaurants are owned and operated within the same family-line? Ok last one, did you know that Dorothy Zehnder, matriarch of the Bavarian Inn Restaurant, STILL works in the kitchen 6 days a week at the age of 95? Those are just a few teasers, get the rest of the history when you visit the restaurants!
